The Computing and Archiving Research Environment (CoARE) targets to enable multiple data integration from ASTI-initiated projects and collaborative projects with other agencies that have high requirements for data storage and high-performance computing.

About COARE


The Computing and Archiving Research Environment (CoARE) project essentially targets to enable multiple data integration from DOST-ASTI-initiated projects and collaborative projects with other agencies that have high requirements for data storage and high-performance computing.

Project Objectives
To foster collaboration by providing a platform for easy storage, analysis and sharing of environmental and geospatial data, as well as provide better access to high performance computing resources by:

  • establishing a durable and highly available repository for environmental data, including systems for archiving and access, and providing recommendations to the PGIF on data sharing, access, and storage; and,
  • upgrading the existing computing system facility intended to test and run computationally intensive applications for numerical weather prediction, climate modeling, as well as analytics and data modeling.

  1. A durable and highly available storage repository for environmental data, including systems for archiving and access
  2. Expanded computing capacity
  3. Public Key-Infrastructure (PKI) or Single Sign-On (SSO) integration with iGovPhils Project
  4. Catalogue service for searching archived and real-time data

History


The DOST-ASTI launched the ICT for the Environment Program in 2008 primarily aimed to develop cost-effective platforms and applications for real-time monitoring of environmental parameters, as well as automate the process from data gathering to transmission. At the same time, DOST-ASTI launched the Philippine e-Science Grid (PSciGrid), which was the Agency’s response to the emerging need for a national initiative on grid computing for e-Science. PSciGrid was initiated to address the science and technology community’s need to have a concerted effort towards fully harnessing ICT infrastructures that can benefit the country’s local research and development, and essentially, for researchers and scientists to participate in cutting-edge collaborative scientific research that aims to solve global problems.

Through the PSciGrid Program, a high-performance computing facility was established in DOST-ASTI. This facility is intended to offer computational and data grid services to national, educational and research institutions that require high-speed computing to process the large amount of data that they handle. Significantly, among the applications that are run in this facility are on numerical and climate modelling which are being used by PAGASA, Manila Observatory, Ateneo de Manila University, UP-NIGS, UP-IESM, among others.

Services


  1. HPC
    A cluster of aggregated computing power that has the capacity to handle and analyze massive amounts of data at high speed. Compared to a regular desktop, it can accelerate speed of calculations and can deliver much higher performance. Currently, the CoARE HPC is already composed of 3120 cores with 10Gbps network speed and will expand until end of 2017.
  2. Storage
    A durable repository is setup to store researchers' environmental and geospatial data. The repository can be used to store data, short-term or long term.
  3. Science Cloud
    The Science Cloud is one of the main services that the CoARE project offers. Science Cloud provides cloud-based services to researchers and students by providing virtual machines (VM).

NOTE

 A default allocation per service is already set to ensure that CoARE facility resources will be fairly distributed to users.

I. Determine the service/s you will avail
  • HPC Service
    This service is for you if you are a student or a researcher who:

    • has high requirements for high-performance computing;
    • needs to process data using various applications; and
    • needs to perform large scale calculations

NOTE

Once you are granted access to the HPC cluster, a 20TB storage (10TB in scracth1 and 10TB in scracth2) for raw, active and output data is automatically provisioned to your account. Also, a 100 GB storage space is allocated in your home directory. 

  •  Storage Service
    You may avail this service if you are a student or a researcher who needs to store large amount of data (GB to TB), which data is accessible to the public

IMPORTANT NOTE: There is no need to apply for this service if the data you need to store will be used only for your HPC run. You will automatically be allocated with 20TB storage for these types of data and 100GB in your home directory.

  • Cloud Service
    This service is for students and researchers who require a Virtual Machine (VM) for the ff. purposes:

    • website hosting
    • file storage and sharing;
    • file backup;
    • cloud computing;
    • cloud database;
    • cloud-based email services; and
    • test and development.

III. Email Endorsement Letter of Immediate Supervisor/Adviser
Send the signed Endorsement letter of your supervisor to CoARE team at gridops@asti.dost.gov.ph, addressed to Mr. Rene C. Mendoza (CoARE Project Leader, DOST-ASTI).

  • Letter head is not required but recommended.
  • Failure to submit Endorsement letter may mean deferment of application.
  • For those who will be requesting to avail Other Services , there is no need to email endorsement letter. Please contact CoARE team at gridops@asti.dost.gov.ph to seek help on how to proceed with your application.
IV. Assessment of Application
Upon submission of your accomplished form and endorsement letter, an email will be sent to acknowledge receipt of application form and letter. Your application will be evaluated for 1-2 working days. If the resources you requested are too big or insufficient for your research's requirement, we will help you align your needs with the appropriate services and resources.Note: Assessment of application will only start when all requirements are submitted.
 
V. Provision of Credentials
Once application is approved, necessary credentials will be given to you. From here, you can now access the CoARE facility.
